Quick Introduction to Hostels in Paris
For many backpackers, Paris is their first stop so it's not surprising that Paris has an enormous selection of hostels. Many Paris Hostels are among the best hostels in Europe.
Unfortunately, a lot of hostels in Paris are of a mediocre standard at best. The rooms can be confined, the stairways very tight and in general a lot of the hostels are very run down. But don't let this put you off booking a hostel as Paris also has some excellent hostels.
The hostel market in Paris is dominated by three hostel chains: Hiphophostels, The People and St Christopher's.
Here are a few things you should consider before booking a hostel in Paris:
Price - Hostels in Paris are among the most expensive in Europe. In a dorm room, a bed starts at €20 a night (normally in large dorm rooms), but a medium-sized dorm room will cost between €30 and €40 per night (6 to 10 beds). Please note that the city tax (€1.90 per night) is not included in the pricing of some hostels in Paris. As with all other major cities in Europe prices at the weekend tend to be 20% to 50% higher. Prices will also be higher during the summer months.
Location - Paris is a very large city so it's best to stay in a central location close to the top sights and nightlife. However, if you stay in a local district that is close to a metro stop, you won't have any problems getting in and out of the city. A large number of hostels can be found around the main train station (Gare du Nord).
Amenities/Services - Every hostel in Paris has free Wi-Fi but very few include breakfast in the price. Many hostels have a guest kitchen but many don't as well especially hostels that have onsite restaurants. If you require more specific services, you will need to do your research.
Staff -The majority of hostels in Paris have excellent staff. They are usually very friendly and will give you superb recommendations for bars, restaurants, and clubs, among other things. However, my advice is to read the reviews on Hostelworld carefully to ensure that the hostel you select has friendly and helpful employees.
Curfews - Some hostels in Paris still have a curfew in place, normally 12 midnight but luckily very few hostels do this anymore. Also some hostels close for cleaning normally from 12 noon to 4 pm.
