Hello & Welcome

I'm Mike McGuinness, the writer/editor of Nomadic Mick. I'm a professional web developer, blogger, digital nomad and parent. I've been travelling the world with my wife and young son since 2012.

Growing up in rural Ireland meant that I got to travel a lot. I didn't travel overseas for the first time till I was 20 years old. After my senior year of college (1994), I traveled to Switzerland and got a job on a farm despite my inadequate French. Although I had to work very hard on the farm, sometimes working 14 hours per day. I didn't mind because I had almost every weekend off. I also visited Germany, France, and Italy on that trip.

Following that, in 1999, my manager decided to give me a leave of absence from my position in Dublin. After visiting Prague in the Czech Republic the previous summer, I decided to relocate there since I fell in love with the city (and the cheap beer). I got a job in a pub and also started teaching English part-time. I was there for nine months.

My next significant journey was to Brazil in 2002. I was robbed at gunpoint in a bar, which was an eye-opening event.

In 2008 I moved back to Prague, where I first worked in a Call Center. In 2009 I met my future wife also in Prague and I managed her bar til we decided to leave in September 2012 as she was pregnant.

In October 2012 I along with my pregnant wife travelled to Bangkok, Thailand. The highlight of this trip was the 10 days that we spent on Lonely Beach Koh Chang. We also traveled to Chiang Mai and we spent 3 adventurous weeks in Cambodia.

From October 2014 to April 2015, we lived in Asia again. This time we visited Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. We lived in Chiang Mai in Thailand for 2 months, because it is very well set up for digital nomads.

Over the last 6 years, I mainly travelled around Europe, spending the winters in the South of Spain and summers escaping the heat to somewhere in Europe that's cooler.

Altogether I have travelled to almost 40 countries on 4 different continents and I have lived and worked in 4 countries: Ireland, Switzerland, Czech Republic (currently a resident), and Thailand.
