Safestay Madrid Review

Updated on: April 13, 2024 by Mick

I stayed in Safestay Madrid for 6 weeks in February and March 2023. This hostel is located in a very central location. The Alonzo Martinez metro station is only 120 metres and there is a convenience store (Dia) that's only 3 doors down from the hostel.

Malasana which is the area with the largest concentration of bars and restaurants is only 500 metres away. Safestay Madrid is definitely one of the best hostels in Madrid.

Practical Information of Safeway Madrid

Safestay Madrid is set in a completely renovated 19th Century building. But it keeps a lot of its old charming features. This 6-floor building has 2 lifts to wiz you up and down from your room.

  • Address: C. de Sagasta, 22, 28004 Madrid
  • Opening Hours: 24/7
  • Nearest Metro: Alonso Martinez

The Staff and Check-in

The staff at Safestay Madrid were absolutely superb and spoke excellent English. I asked for an unusual request while checking it and they had no problem doing that. As I had checked in already online, getting the keycard from the receptionist only took 2 minutes.

What was the room like?

The dorm rooms were bright, immaculately clean and very spacious. Each bed has a large locker. Don't worry if you forget to bring a padlock as they are sold downstairs at reception.

All dorm rooms are heated in the Winter and have air-conditioning in the Summer. Each dorm bed comes with its own shelf where you can put some personal items. The mattress was very comfortable and I slept well every night.

Who is this hostel for?

Safestay Madrid could be classed as a number of different types of hostels all rolled into one. This hostel is ideal for all backpackers because the hostel caters to every budget. If you are on a tight budget, then the 10-bed room will be ideal for you. For backpackers who are not so concerned about their budget, they have 4-bed dorm rooms that have sinks where you can brush your teeth at night. Obviously, these rooms are more expensive.

Is the Breakfast worth it?

Breakfast is served every morning from 8 am to 11 am. The Breakfast can get very crowded especially on the weekends so it's best to get there as early as possible. The Breakfast consists of Crossant with ham & cheese, yoghurt, orange juice and a coffee. It cost just €4.50 and it was very much worth it.

Is this hostel good for Digital Nomads?

This hostel is a good option for Digital Nomads. I worked in the common room beside the reception and in the breakfast room. There were always 3 or 4 other travellers working on their laptops while I was there. The Wifi connection is excellent even in the rooms on the 5th floor and the rooftop bar on the 6th floor. In other words, the Wifi connection is very strong throughout the entire building.

As you can see from the screenshot of a speed test above, the download speed was 186 Mbps and the upload speed was 136 Mbps.

Rooftop Bar

Safeway also happens to have one of the best rooftop bars in Madrid. The Rooftop Bar is one of the standout features of Safeway Madrid. It's open every night from 6 pm to 3 am. It's located on the 6th floor of the hostel and can be accessed by one of the lifts. This is clearly signed.

This well-designed bar is completely covered although it is an open-air bar. Here you can slip a cocktail or a beer while enjoying panoramic views of Madrid. A .4L beer cost me €4.00.

Common Rooms

Safestay Madrid has many common areas located around the reception. These include the Library room (where I worked on my laptop) and the TV room which also doubles as a chill-out area. Some nights there full-length movies played on the TV.

How Much Does it Cost To Stay at Safestay Madrid?

Generally speaking, the cheapest nights are between Sunday and Tuesday, with Sundays always being the most affordable night. The price on Wednesdays and Thursdays was usually 50% more. The price at the weekend can be twice as expensive as on weekdays. I paid between €16 and €40 per night for a bed in a 10-dorm room. However, they did upgrade me on least one occasion to a room with fewer beds.

Are there events at Safestay Madrid?

There is a nightly pub crawl which costs €20 but it includes free shots and the entrance fee to a nightclub. You can book your place on this at reception but every night a young lady will come around to your room to remind you of this. They also host regular free walking tours of Madrid. Just ask at reception for more details about these.

Are There Any Age Restrictions?

There are no age restrictions at Safestay Madrid. Sometimes hostels in other cities have age restrictions for dorm rooms but this is not the case with most hostels in Madrid.

Is Safestay Madrid Safe?

Yes, Safeway Madrid is extremely safe. Your keycard is required to get through the main door to the rooms and is also required to get into your room. Each dorm bed comes with its own clearly defined locker. These lockers are large enough to fit a standard-sized backpack and a day bag into them. Don't worry if you forget to bring your own padlock as you can buy one at reception.

The Pros and Cons of Staying at Safestay Madrid

Safestay Madrid has many different services and amenities.

There are many Pros:

  • Good central location
  • Good atmosphere
  • Very social hostel
  • Excellent breakfast (4.50 Euros)
  • Very comfortable mattress
  • Very clean overall
  • Excellent and informative staff
  • 24-hour reception
  • Great Security
  • Chill-out Rooftop Bar
  • Very fast Wifi which also works great in the rooms
  • 2 lifts

There are very few Cons:

  • Can be noisy at night, especially at the weekends but this is no fault of the hostel.
  • The dorm beds don't have their own privacy curtain.

Final Thoughts on Safestay Madrid

Safestay is an amazing hostel that caters to everyone looking for more than a simple bed to stay in. This hostel is really for everyone as it caters to all budgets. Safestay is not the cheapest hostel in Madrid. If it would be super cheap, it could not offer all these amazing facilities that it has. That said it's not the most expensive hostel in Madrid either. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Safestay and wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.
